Metabolic Engineering & Systems Biology

Metabolic engineering is used to better understand and use cellular pathways for chemical transformation, energy transduction and molecular assembly. This can then be used to modify biological pathways for production of chemicals, improving plant productivity and safer energy production, and study of medical conditions.

Systems biology seeks to integrate different levels of information to better understand the holistic functioning by better understanding the interactions between, for example, gene and protein networks and metabolic pathways. Mathematical and computer simulation serve as useful research methodologies.
